So, have fun browsing these interesting and fun washroom designs, and hopefully, it will get you thinking about what matters most in your washroom refurbishment.
1. Varsity Theatre Award-Winning Bathroom
Our number one spot falls to the Varsity Theatre in Minnesota, USA, for its award-winning washroom design. Designers of this space understood the assignment and truly brought the theatrics to the theatre with this Harry Potter meets Steampunk vibe.
We love the exposed brickwork and huge saucer-shaped basins that create a feature of a standard facility. This fantasy theme was crowned Cintas’ America’s Best Restroom Contest in 2013.
2. Hundertwasser Public Toilets
This next public bathroom is a functional art installation created by world-famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. In fact, it was his final project, and he completed it in the small New Zealand town of Kawakawa, where he spent his final years.
This washroom is a beautiful example of different elements incorporated together to create a visual masterpiece. In the construction, a mix of unconventional materials has been used, including recycled glass bottles, ceramics and tiles. Our favourite part is the use of different coloured glass bottles positioned together to let the light shine into the space while retaining privacy. Plus, it creates a beautiful psychedelic appearance!
3. Penthouse Elevator Shaft Bathroom
When it comes to making the most of the available space, architect Hernandez Silva proves that anything is possible with this elevator shaft that has been transformed into a washroom space. Not only have they repurposed the area, but also leaned into the origin and kept the visual of the elevator drop with a clear floor.
Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea. But there is no denying this genius idea proves that any space can be transformed into a fully-functioning and stylish washroom space.
4. The Madonna Inn Restrooms
Another washroom that is fit for purpose is the restrooms at The Madonna Inn in California, USA. These restrooms have now become an attraction in their own right, for a good reason. Each washroom has been designed with ornate theming to match the rest of the accommodations’ design, ranging from fine furnishings and European fixtures to exposed rock work.
The ladies’ room is an excellent spot for women to feel pampered and doubles as an Instagram-worthy hotspot. Holographic fuchsia wallpaper adds a glow that is offset by the traditional red quilting to the woodwork of the facilities. Lighting is cleverly disguised in a circus tent-type decor, and a large communal vanity allows visitors to check their appearance and grab that perfect mirror-selfie before heading out the door.
The men’s room is also thoughtfully designed with waterfall urinals, highlighting how every detail has been well thought out and executed.
5. Lantern Public Restroom
We had to save space on our list for the beautifully innovative public bathroom designed by Gort Scott. Located in the pedestrian area surrounding Wembley Stadium, this bathroom was conceptualised to inspire pride in the location.
The design of this public bathroom is particularly innovative as it combines function and practicality with a whimsical design. But how does it achieve this? Well, the concrete base raises into a delicate filigree metal screen. Solid for five feet, perforations in a filigree pattern ascend above head height to maintain privacy and allow ventilation and light to shine inside.
Our favourite part is how the light reflects as the sky darkens, creating a large lantern effect illuminating the building.
